Hard water contains dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium and may also introduce iron or copper depending on the water source and plumbing. Repeated exposure can contribute to dull appearance, rough feel, reduced foam and visible mineral residue. A hard-water shampoo should therefore combine effective cleansing, a suitable chelating system and conditioning support without making unsupported claims that it removes every mineral completely.
What does salt-free mean?
In this project, salt-free should be communicated as no added sodium chloride. Sodium chloride is often used to adjust shampoo viscosity, but a formula can be thickened through surfactant balance, polymers or starch-based rheology. The final INCI may still contain sodium-named ingredients that are not sodium chloride, so the label wording must remain precise.
Chelating system for calcium, magnesium, iron and copper
Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate can be used as a biodegradable-oriented chelating ingredient, while Sodium Phytate may provide complementary metal-ion binding. The formula pH, use level and surfactant system must be optimized together.
Effectiveness should be demonstrated through a defined laboratory method rather than ingredient theory alone. Suitable evaluation may compare treated and untreated hair tresses exposed to standardized mineral water, followed by instrumental mineral analysis such as ICP-OES or ICP-MS. Hair feel, combing, shine and residue can be assessed as supporting performance data.
Why add Batana oil?
Batana oil supports a nourishing, heritage-led ingredient story for dry, fragile and textured hair. In shampoo it should be used at a controlled level so cleansing, foam and stability remain acceptable. It does not perform the chelating function; mineral binding comes from the chelating system.
Recommended formula direction
A sulfate-free direction may combine Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate or glucoside surfactants according to the target market and sensory profile. Glycerin, betaine, panthenol, hydrolyzed protein and a conditioning polymer may support softness and manageability.
The formula should be evaluated for viscosity, foam, wet combing, dry feel, color, odor, preservation and compatibility with the selected bottle.
EU and Middle East positioning
For Europe, the responsible person, CPSR, PIF, CPNP notification and compliant labeling are part of the brand’s market-entry pathway. For Middle East markets, requirements differ by destination, importer and local authority. English and Arabic artwork should reserve space for ingredients, directions, warnings, country of origin, batch details and importer information.
